I read this a month ago and can't remember a single thing about it. Two stars, because I don't remember disliking it either. As the short story shows the development of a character, it becomes interesting.. Also the more interesting point is that such a goal is attained via reading books. As a prisoner the attorney asks for all sorts of books: the list that Chekhov provides is great. Finally I loved the letter he has written for the Banker. Am quite sure... A short story indeed to make you wonder on the philosophy of life. The story may be too short to leave an ever-lasting mark in your thinking but it may spark something within to reflect on life.
