In 1980 publiceerde Cees Nooteboom zijn roman Rituelen, een boek dat zou uitgroeien tot een moderne klassieker en bovendien tot een van de meest vertaalde boeken uit de Nederlandse literatuur. Het werd in 1989 verfilmd en ontving de F. Bordewijk-prijs en in Amerika de Pegasus Prize for Literature.Inni Wintrop, de hoofdpersoon, is nadat zijn vrouw hem heeft verlaten en na een mislukte zelfmoordpoging, op zoek naar betekenis in een leeg universum. Nooteboom schetst een tijdsbeeld van de jaren zestig en zeventig in een subtiele en luisterrijke roman, die bijna dertig jaar na dato alleen maar aan zeggingskracht heeft gewonnen.

Voor de derde keer gelezen en weer die magische ervaring. Wat een prachtig boek. Deze roman zet je aan het denken over het leven (en de dood). Kun je meer verlangen? Nooteboom, mijn favoriete Nederlandse schrijver. 2016: Voor de vierde keer gelezen voor een leeskring. En wederom werd ik na het eerste hoofdstuk, dat altijd wat moeite... I purchased "Rituals" because raku pottery plays an important role in this book. It was a quick read, but not a painless one. A bit like sitting on your knees for tea ceremony. A bit bitter, like lower grade usucha tea, the first part of the ceremony. Interestingly enough, the author does not describe the second part of the tea ceremony... This book baffles me. Cees Nooteboom is a Dutch writer who is sometimes touted for the Noble Prize. I've read only one of his books before, "The Following Story," which I liked a great deal.
